Visa Requirements for Travelers to Bhutan
Traveling to Bhutan is an exciting adventure, but it’s essential to understand the visa requirements before you embark on your journey. For visitors from India, Bangladesh, and the Maldives, the process is simple: you can obtain a permit upon arrival by presenting a valid passport with at least six months of validity. Indian nationals also have the option to use their Voter Identity Card (VIC) for this purpose.
For all other international travelers, a visa clearance is necessary prior to your arrival in Bhutan. This process is conveniently managed through an online system by your licensed Bhutanese tour operator or a foreign travel agent.
To initiate your visa application, simply send the photo page of your passport to your tour operator. They will handle the application on your behalf. Please note that the Department of Tourism (DOT)will process your visa only after the full payment for your holiday, including a USD $40 visa fee, has been successfully wire transferred and received in the DOT bank account. Once your payment is confirmed, your visa clearance will be processed within 72 working hours.
Upon arrival in Bhutan, be sure to present your visa clearance letter at the point of entry, where your visa will be stamped into your passport, welcoming you to this beautiful kingdom.
Introducing the Online Regional Permit System
To enhance the travel experience for tourists from Bangladesh, India, and the Maldives, the Department of Immigration, Ministry of Home and Cultural Affairs, in collaboration with the Tourism Council of Bhutan, has launched the Online Regional Permit System. This innovative system streamlines the permit application process for regional tourists through registered Bhutanese tour operators and DOT-certified hotels.
This optional service allows visitors from the region to secure their permit clearances and route permits in advance of their arrival in Bhutan, similar to the process for international tourists. This means less hassle and more time to enjoy the breathtaking beauty and rich culture that Bhutan has to offer!
